Remade Scotland is a major initiative which seeks to stimulate, develop and strengthen recyclate material markets in Scotland.

Supported by the public and private sector in a unique partnership, the Remade programme - the first of its kind in the UK - was launched in 1999. The programme has been assisting both Local Authorities and the Waste Industry for nearly 10 years providing successful, cost effective and sustainable solutions. Well aware of the importance of others players such as community groups to further develop recyclate material markets, Remade Scotland also works with and provides guidelines to several of these organisations.

We sit on all the major Scottish Executive Waste Related Strategy and Policy advisory groups, and on the Scottish Centre Council of the CIWM, with various staff members contributing to CIWM Technical committees.

The ongoing support to Local Authorities and Scottish executive is being delivered jointly with other organisations such as SWAG, CRNS and WRAP, as part of an integrated program able to provide a wealth of expertise on waste management issues.

  • Initially focussing on direct market intervention, the programme has gradually evolved to include supporting recovery of recyclate by LA collection schemes (see latest Review of Kerbside Collection Schemes) and ensuring supply of material meets demand from the end markets.

  • Another project supporting LA’s seek to analyse and explore all the factors related to recyclate pricing. The full report (Link) indicates how these are likely to change in the future, and what the possible solutions are to overcoming barriers that may arise to best prices.

  • Remade has recently completed a study of the Markets for Recyclable Materials Recovered by Scottish Local Authorities. An event on the 6th June 2007 was organised to discuss the main findings of the report and to debate the issues of Markets, Material Quality and Infrastructure. The event brought together the main stakeholders of the waste industry.

  • Data modelling on behalf of Local Authorities and The Scottish Executive is an ongoing activity aiming to support the development of their Strategic Waste Fund Bids. This activity is carried out using an in-house cost model developed by Remade staff.
